TPI Certified Golf Fitness Instructor – Review

June 1st, 2010 by John Graham Leave a reply »

I just returned from a seminar offered by the Titleist Performance Institute (TPI) that would allow me to become a TPI Certified Golf Fitness Instructor.  This post will discuss my review of the seminar and the information provided.

I thought that the information was presented very well and the seminar itself was well organized.  As with any seminar that is used as an introduction, it’s job is to motivate and generate interest on future information.  This intro seminar was quite successful in these areas.  I am surely interested in investigating more information about golf fitness.

The seminar was broken into three basic parts.  There was a section on 3D swing info, a section on golf swing faults and a third section on the screening process.  I thought the 3d swing info was quite interesting.  This kind of info is right up my alley and I’d love to learn more about this information.

The golf swing fault information was to explain to the physical trainers and medical people what faults TPI think are the most prevalent and what they look like.  For a nongolfer, I can only imagine how difficult that section was.  Lots of jargon to learn and understand without much explanation or detail into why they are faults.

The final section was on the screening process.  This was where we were taught how to give an accurate screening for a person ability to perform important movements related to a good/efficient golf swing.  I felt they did an excellent job giving us enough opportunity to learn the skill and try it on seminar attendees.  They noted common problems with plenty of review.  I’m sorry to report that I failed almost all of the screens and it’s quite clear that I am not in good golf shape.

Currently, there are less than 10 Level 1 TPI Certified Golf Fitness Instructor in Rochester, NY.  I felt that this information would allow me to offer better information to those looking for help with programs over the winter.  All in all I am quite satisfied with my experience at the seminar and will be taking the certification test soon.  If you’re in Rochester, NY and you are looking for information about your golf fitness, please come see John Graham at Webster Golf Club.

  3. Did they teach you what exercises to do in order to correct the errors for the client?

  4. John Graham says:

    Debra,

They didn’t teach us what exercises to do but they told how to find out which exercises to do. After they go through the screening, we enter the results into a program on the mytpi site and that will recommend which exercises to do. They also recommend at that point, that the supervision switch over to a professional personal trainer to make sure they are doing them correctly.

TPI very big on creating a team environment between the golf pro, trainer and medical person.

  5. John: Did you ever end up getting certified by TPI? If so, where did you do it and who taught the certification?

  6. John Graham says:

    Nick,

Yes, I did Level 1 in Toronto.

Greg Rose, Jason Glass and a few others were there.

    John,
Was the seminar really worth the money? Where do people work with this certification? The website doesn’t seem to offer career guidance and it is quite an investment.
    Thanks!

    Chris,

    Sorry for the late reply.

I think for a person that is going to use the information, it is certainly worth it.

I have chosen not to focus on this area so, for me, it ended up not having much value but was of no fault of the program.

If the fitness level of your players appeals to you and how you teach, I would recommend checking it out.

    Hi,
I am a Physiotherapist, Yoga Teacher, Personal Trainer,TRX trainer from INDIA planning to do the TPI level 1. Its going to cost me $2000 in total. What is the Fitness Part they teach in the seminar. Is it really good.

    Sagar,

The main thing you will learn in TPI Level 1 is the physical screens and how they want you to perform them. That’s just about it. They don’t really go into any depth in level 1. After Level 1, when you choose a track to go down, I’m sure it gets more involved in your area of expertise.
