Golf Lesson – Backswing Pivot

February 21st, 2010 by John Graham Leave a reply »

Here’s a post to start a new category for Golf Lesson.  There’s been a bunch of talk on Twitter and other online venues about Stack and Tilt and what should or shouldn’t happen to the spine in the backswing.  Here’s a video from James Ridyard (aka. @golfswingrebel) that I think should be mandatory viewing to all teachers and future teachers.  It seems so simple when you watch it and yet I have misrepresented the backswing pivot in the past.

Depending on the type of backswing pivot you are trying to make, some proportion of the three elements will be in there.  FYI – Some teachers call sidebend, a tilt.

Great explanation–and review at the beginning of the season is perfect. Having worked w/ Jimmy Ballard in the 80′s, I have to constantly work to eliminate the big backswing move to the right. I have to feel like a reverse pivot but this video reminds me I just need more side and back bend.

Yea, One of my favorite and simple videos.

Makes it quite clear what needs to be done.

Oh, Dude! Run don’t walk from the S & T!!! The whole concept is based upon (stolen from) Mack O’Grady/Gary McCord’s MORAD golf philosophy. Interestingly, what O’Grady originally came up with isn’t that far removed from what O’Grady learned from Homer Kelly but nonethless is WRONG. O’Grady, et al, were chasing what Hogan was able to do. (Hogan was Kelly’s model for the “ideal” swnger’s swing.)

Better to study VJ Trolio’s book “The Final Missing Piece of Ben Hogan’s Swing”. It’s MUCH CLOSER to the truth than the S&T. BTW_The S&T will produce very crisp/boring irons shots; but the 3w/driver is toast. Just axe Franklin Langham/ others. Leter. RDM

    Roy,

Are you saying the backswing pivot doesn’t work like shown in the video?

I’ll check out the book. I don’t really think the SNTers are trying to swing like Hogan.

It appears that at least Troy Matteson is able to drive it well over 300 using something similar to this method.

If you haven’t actually been to a clinic, I would highly recommend it. I haven’t heard from any teacher that actually studied it that didn’t find some good information in it.

I’ve found many that didn’t understand it.
