Golf Puzzle-Are You Missing A Piece?

September 21st, 2011

Visit my home at any time (open invite right there!) and it highly likely you’ll find my daughter Evie spending time attending to a jigsaw puzzle at various stages of its life…..be that just out the box and attending to those ‘straight edges and corners’ first…deciding which block of ‘similar colours’ to start next ….or getting pre-occupied with one particularly elusive piece hiding amongst other ‘similar’ pieces.

She’ll pick up one, convinced ‘it’s the one’…..only to find that despite being close…doesn’t quite fit. I’m sure if she could get away with it, she’d file off a section and declare completion sooner than was actually true…and heaven forbid if I point out that elusive piece is sitting under the table (having been knocked off many days previously and hand it to her)…Evie would have me go to jail instantly, such is my interpretation of her facial expression!

So why is it that even though I point her in the direction of the missing piece….she’s still not best pleased it’s a step closer to completing the puzzle?

‘Because Dad, I wanted to do it by myself….I don’t want you finding pieces for me….may as well pack it up and start another one….Thanks a lot….NOT’

This has been the pattern of Evie +puzzles for as long as I can remember ,so  rarely now do I point out the piece on the floor….or hand it to her(jail beckons remember)….but I have adopted the habit of secretly sliding it back onto the table when she’s not aware…positioning it amongst other pieces so not to draw attention to my exploits….after all, I’m totally aware that Evie wants to do it all by herself with no ‘obvious’ help from me.

But in the world of being a parent…or coach…there’s always a way to help in ‘other ways’….isn’t there?

Evie reports that collecting the OUTSIDE pieces first…. (straight edges and corners first)  is an obvious starting point and easier to get her going. Very quickly she’s constructed the frame…now it’s down to the real business of puzzles…finding the INSIDE pieces….knowing that some are more elusive and may take some time….guess that’s the challenge of completing any puzzle!

Right now Evie’s choice of puzzle is one displaying ‘The Simpsons Family’ with each piece made up of mini-pictures. From a distance it looks impossible, on closer inspection I can see she follows a strategy which involves the use of a magnifying glass for maximum scrutiny. It’s a puzzle she’s completed many times and I’d hazard a guess, to date, it’s her favourite puzzle.

‘Evie, haven’t you done that one before….isn’t it easier 2nd or 9th time around?’

‘I just enjoy doing it Dad….don’t want my puzzles to be too easy after all!….and NO…I don’t need your help!!’ (and you can put down the magnifying glass too..)

‘And don’t even think about putting pieces in when I’m at school….I’ve counted them!’

The similarity with being Evie’s Dad and her fixation with puzzles….and my role as coach with player’s golf games hasn’t gone unnoticed.

Of course you may well be several steps ahead as to where this article is going ….how it relates to your role as coach….how it relates to how you play…but humour me a little while longer as I wander along.

It’s still my belief (AND A STRONG ONE AT THAT) that one of the main reasons why a player’s game stalls is simply down to working on the pieces which are easier to see (straight edges and corners) and failing to notice the piece that has slipped under the table.

It’s not that the piece is missing (or you have to go to a secret puzzle maker who will give you his magic piece) it’s just that you aren’t looking in that particular place for it. ‘Gurus’ apparently have an Aladdin’s Cave of every piece known to man and for a small bag of gold pieces will share it with you!

Well….I don’t have such pieces, but what I do have is something akin to one of those big comedy hands pointing in the direction of the underside of your table.

You have ALL THE PIECES with which to complete your golfing puzzle….you just need to look in a different place

So, we’re nearing the end of YET ANOTHER playing season here in the UK… I’m guessing that’s true of other areas of the world too…and I’m also guessing that for a lot of players it’s been ANOTHER YEAR with a game that started out great (straight edges and corners showing up fast) only for the game to grind to a snail’s pace when that stubborn, elusive piece didn’t come into view.

If that’s you….maybe it’s time to recognise that the easy , straight edges…don’t require as much attention….and that the pieces that habitually slide out of view perhaps require more of your awareness.

Tough to complete any puzzle if you only focus on the outside!

By straight edges, I mean the obvious ‘external’ guide you follow and use as a barometer of success (score, handicap, ball flight, swing positions) which are fine at forming a frame for your game….but that’s all they are….A FRAME.

Without the INSIDE pieces filled in, there will always be gaps.

And you can have the best frame in the world….until you recover that elusive piece(s) from off the floor, completion isn’t any closer.

Don’t let anyone convince you that you have pieces MISSING or LACKING…for me they have just been overlooked as you’ve become a little too fixated on the straight edges.

I accept I share my world of elusive, inside pieces ( armed with Evie’s magnifying glass and curiosity) with a world of outside straight edges and corners….and  that’s fine.

Not everyone is aware of the piece that’s slid under the table, many are only interested in the obvious, visible components of golf game progression..I accept that.

But if you’re still reading this, I’m pretty sure you too have at least a passing interest in where I’m sitting.

Golf game progression appears to remain elusive for many players. If that’s you, I’m merely pointing to the idea that you may have inadvertently been caught in a trap whereby your personal puzzle is too heavily weighted towards the OUTSIDE….maybe it’s time to glance under the table and realise the very piece you are after has always been there?

I’ll leave you with one last thought-

Mainstream coaching will try to convince you you’re not long enough…..straight enough…fit enough…..flexible enough……educated enough…..coached enough…..strong enough… maybe all you need is to become AWARE ENOUGH.

The piece you seek has always been there. If you’re unsure how to find the way to where it sits, I have a magnifying glass, comedy hand and enough awareness which you can share whenever you want. www.progolfmindcoach.co.uk

I’ve just noticed a couple more pieces which fill find their way back to the table…It’s okay, Evie is at school and pretty sure her CCTV isn’t running between 10 and 11am….

Guess I understand that when returning personal pieces….I’m always aware of what’s important to Evie and when it’s a safe time to engage in puzzle piece collection.

If you’re convinced golf progression is all about the frame, it’s not me you need. If you feel a few pieces have slipped under the radar and require a little help  with the inside pieces of your puzzle…I promise not to put them in for you….It’s your puzzle, and besides, I don’t want to go to jail!

Stay well…

Elusive Nature Of Your Personal Best

August 7th, 2011

For whatever reason, I woke up mega early this morning.

Not sure if it was because I had things on my mind that prompted me to start my day earlier than expected….whether I’d planted the seed for this article the previous day and couldn’t wait any longer….or because I went to bed last night a little earlier than normal because there was absolutely nothing on TV which remotely caught my attention….fact was, I was up early!

I sat outside for an hour or so….just listening to the day starting…my quiet time before the household caught up and pinched some of that time away from me. I used to be up early every day in my past job….years as a postman ensured I experienced the start of every day in this same quiet, reflective space. And this morning reminded me of just how different the first part of the day is for me….

And then I wrote this article because in those moments I was reminded of just what happens when I’m in that reflective mood …My personal best!

You see, for me, it appears my personal best is way more likely to show up when I’m sitting with nothing on my mind…and the more frequent I get into that space, the more productive I am… more creative…more instinctive….more trusting of my abilities…and the more authentic version of me shows itself.

Contrast that with when I’m ‘trying’ to improve a skill set….analysing this technique and that strategy…comparing myself to others….or to where I was yesterday…or where I believe I need to be next week….and the elusive nature of my personal best becomes distant again.

So why is it that my personal best….the levels of excellence I strive for….shows itself when I do nothing?

And ‘by nothing’ I’m referring to my thinking!

Sitting outside at the start of a brand new day, I was able to ‘hear’ the quietness of the new day simply because I was quiet in myself. I’m sure the quietness of each day is always out there…it’s just I don’t experience it. And I don’t experience it because I know it’s being drowned out by the volume of my thoughts playing out on a continuous loop.

But allow myself to go quiet….and all becomes clear.

I was lucky to meet up with an existing player this week as he’d arranged an 18 hole playing session; he wanted to assess where he was. That’s pretty much what all the players do….they go away and work on any previous suggestions we’ve explored and then catch up to see where they are.

And for the first 3-4 holes he was ‘trying ‘ to be himself….play a version of himself which was perhaps a product of the expectations he brought to the day, perform tasks which were expected of a player of X handicap and maybe live up to a standard which he perceived I was looking out for.

Except I wasn’t! I was there with no agenda….no expectations…no comparison model to gauge where he was…I was just like I was early this morning, observing and interacting with him with nothing on my mind. I was in a space which opened up the possibility of me being my personal best.

And because I continued to be in that space….he found himself moving into a similar space too. The result was the further we went into the round…the quieter he became….the less he thought…..the more he experienced…the more creative he became…..the better he played…the more of himself he showed…..He became his personal best!

The seeds of our personal best appear to be sown on the inside…because when we are aligned on the inside (Trust, Awareness, Connection, Well Being) the level of excellence we all strive for just seems to show up on the outside in our performances.

For me, players are still largely looking on the outside (ball flight, swing plane, results, score) and using them as a barometer of their ‘personal best’….is that really where it is?

Wonder how many times you’ll break your ‘personal best’ for 18 holes and it will be down to the best ball striking round EVER…or the best you’ve EVER swung it..

Or maybe you’ll connect with the idea that your 18 hole ‘personal best’ had less to do with where you hit the ball and more to do with the internal experiences you generated.

This won’t be the first time I’ve pointed to the idea that players continue to look in the wrong place in their attempts to produce better performances. Personal best performances on a  regular basis continue to be elusive for the massive majority of players…..why do you think it’s like that?

For me it’s twofold.

The first is as I’ve eluded to above….

Attention remains EXCLUSIVELY on the outside concepts surrounding performance and whilst they are important, they’ve taken too much importance and distracted players from listening to the inner resources available AS WELL.

Surely both external skill sets and internal awareness have to be embraced?

Just like when I sat in the garden this morning…I was only able to ‘hear’ the quality of the day on the outside when I was quiet on the inside FIRST. Players likewise will really only recognise the quality in their golf games when they accept much of what they see/hear/feel is distorted by too much thinking.

Go quiet…then you’ll experience your game AS IT IS….

And when you accept where you game is TODAY…then you can manage the external skill set and make progress.

See, when you play with nothing on your mind, the capabilities you CURRENTLY hold are obvious. It’s where you are TODAY….it’s where your personal best is TODAY.

The player I shared time with at the end of last week played with the ability he had IN THAT MOMENT. Technically he may not have hit it as well as he expected….or desired….but he accepted it as being representative of where he was…and managed his game accordingly.

So tied in with the idea that our personal best shows itself when we play with no agenda….nothing on our mind…is the idea that our personal best is ALWAYS available.

Why?

Because, just maybe, it’s not based on past or future comparisons/predictions after all but simply about performing with what we have from moment to moment.

If I go out and shoot 72 but know I was stressed, anxious, fearful of outcomes, pre-occupied with external judgment but the external skill set behaved itself….and I’d never shot 72 before….is that my personal best?

Or if I went out and shot 75 but knew I trusted myself, felt at ease, accepted my skill set for what it was ON THAT DAY, was secure enough in myself that external judgement and worry just wasn’t part of my frame…and I’d broke 70 on many occasions previously….is that my personal best?

In terms of being me…the rounds I give more of myself and am closer to my authentic self do represent my personal best….irrespective of what the external marker might suggest.

Players always have a choice and as is usual, this is just my take on the idea of what ‘personal best’ actually represents.

Guess that’s abit like me sitting outside in the garden this morning and instead of enjoying a new day and seeing its uniqueness, compare it to other days which I grade as ‘better’ or ‘worse’.

I was at my best this morning because I experienced being me with nothing on my mind…made no comparison of whether I was better, or worse, than previous mornings….and saw the outside world for what it is….a formless series of moments which I choose to connect with or not.

Maybe next time you’re out on the course, explore playing with no agenda….with nothing on your mind….just like listening to your favourite piece of music or getting so absorbed you literally lose track of time. I’m pretty sure when you play from that frame you are literally experiencing your personal best….

Ironically, when you’re in that space…that score, ball flight, outcome driven evidence you’re after all tend to show up….wonder why that is?

Well, my take is that when you’re in your personal best space, the quality of your CURRENT capability shows up again and again. The player last week played from a great space and we got to see where his game is. Not where he imagines it to be…or where he hopes it is…or where he fears it is.. but EXACTLY where it is. Ownership and Accountability in full view.

Maybe with that in mind…being your personal best isn’t as elusive as you first imagined.

Whatever you choose to do today, be your best, because no matter what happens on the outside, that’s always available. External results can be seductive but perhaps start to see them for what they are (representative of WHERE YOU WERE and not related to WHERE YOU ARE now). You get a chance to be your personal best on a continuous basis, why restrict it to the occasional day in the sun (or rain)  when you better some external marker

Thank you for your time and attention

Golfing Balance- Performance v Identity

June 25th, 2011

I rarely plan these articles in advance. It tends to be more a case of drawing on experiences as they happen….often those experiences are unforeseen and this one was no exception.

If you’ve followed me on Twitter, you may have seen me refer to one of the players I share time with as ‘little star’….a term I apply to her because I see a little something extra in her…Not her performance…but in her.

I’ve been asked many times what I look for in players and how I assess them…and after much thought I’ve arrived at an answer which underpins this post. It’s my belief that players who elevate their games to a point which flies closer to their full potential (whatever that level is) all seem to have one aspect in common.

The ability to separate PERFORMANCE from IDENTITY!

From the elite pro who consistently produces quality performances to the weekend handicapper who rarely shoots way over his/her handicap…the awareness that their golf game doesn’t define them  appears to be key in letting them play with more freedom….and with more freedom comes the increased chance of a better performance.

They are not their golf game….their golf game is PART of what they do. It’s just a PERFORMANCE

Contrast that with the player who constantly yo-yo’s from one standard to another….brilliant one week and very average the next…the player who worries when the next good round will show up…or when the current good form will desert them…what will person A or B think about their scores (good or bad) what person C or D will think if they 3 putt from 8 feet….cart it over the road off the 1st tee in full view of the perceived critics…a different label

They appear to be players defined 100% by their golf; it represents their IDENTITY

So my assessment of ‘little star’ has very little to do with her ball striking, ball flight and swing plane….and more to do with the connection she makes with herself. After 9 months together she enjoys HERSELF regardless of score and that shift alone has allowed her to separate self from performance. Result? Golf game has progressed, handicap has come down, wins more games, swinging it better, ball striking improved….and boy, is she happier on and off course!!

Look around at the best in any field of excellence and it seems the common factor is the same whatever the pursuit, the awareness to separate their performance from their sense of self.

If I get introduced to anyone, I’m Andy…..I’m not Andy THE COACH. That’s something I do PART of the time….but it doesn’t define who I am.

Yesterday I was fortunate to walk 12 holes with ‘little star’ and the seeds for this article were sown with a throwaway comment she made after her one and only bogey. Two beautiful shots on a strong uphill par 4, left her 5 yards short of the green. An average pitch (for her skill set capability) left her some 8 feet away and unable to make the putt walked off with an average looking 5 (for her skill set capability)

Her comment ‘Andy….I didn’t deserve that….I deserved a 4…so unfair’. For me, it was the ONLY time she didn’t separate performance from identity and as a result felt her sense of self had been dealt an unfair hand.

We explored the idea that sure…it’s disappointing in terms of PERFORMANCE…hitting 2 super shots and walking off with a bogey is frustrating…but who she is as a person is immune to any such external judgment. She hadn’t LOST anything…it was just a 5.

Whether she shoots 70 or 75…who she is, is surely immune to any external judgment.

I get that the ‘conditioned’ responses around her point elsewhere. What did you score?….did you win?….why did you take  5?…what’s your handicap now?….all suggest she’s seen as ‘X the golfer’, rather than X who happens to play golf SOME of the time.

Whilst I see being able to separate performance from identity important for ALL golfers…it’s perhaps more relevant for a junior who shows strong early progress.

I’ve included a link at the foot of this article which shows the same issues within a different field of expertise, worth 15 minutes of your time for sure (Thanks to JP O’Brien for sending me the link….much appreciated JP)

If you’re coming off the golf course annoyed, disappointed, frustrated with YOUR PERFORMANCE…I totally get that. That is a healthy position to be in and allows you to look at the areas that didn’t fire and put other skills/ideas into place to improve them. That’s a balanced approach to improving PERFORMANCE.

BUT

If you’re coming off the course and berating YOURSELF….talking your own spirit down, using language to describe yourself in terms which are not only hugely exaggerated but highly disrespectful, maybe you’ve blurred the boundaries and defined who you are by golf game performance. Your golf game has become an aspect of your IDENTITY….

Who you are is way, way more than can ever be defined on a scorecard….by winning, money, handicap or external results.

If you’re unsure if you’ve fallen into the trap of believing you are your golf game, here’s a few tell tale signs for you.

  • Scored really well and openly seek approval, reassurance, praise that it’s a good score….a need for others to notice/acknowledge your efforts (IDENTITY)
  • Scored poorly and worry that others will ask you, anxious about being judged and be ridiculed, talked about (IDENTITY)
  • Talk your game down and exaggerate that your WHOLE WORLD is over (IDENTITY)

Maybe if that’s you it’s time to put some distance between WHO you are….and the game you play SOME of the time

Not only is it way easier to manage, it’s also a clearer reflection of how you’re playing (in real facts as opposed to made up distortion)

If you step a little further away from anything you see more of it….and see things that you wouldn’t see if you’re too close.

Rarely in our perception are we ever as good…or as poor.. as we think we are. The golf game you invest in is always available: it’s just sometimes it gets stuck under the storm clouds of thought.

At the end of 12 holes with ‘little star’, we’d discussed lots of different topics, of which one was her golf game. She’s way more complex than just a golfer and all the aspects of her will contribute to how her performance turns out from day to day.

Just like ‘little star’, irrespective of what you think your performance says about you, I can assure you your sense of self, WHO you really are…is way more than a game of golf.

Continue to define yourself by mere performance…and you’ll continue to yo-yo from week to week. Enjoy the attached link, maybe it’s the 15 minutes which will lead to the next stage of your golf game progress.

Enjoy being you….and if the golf game performance turns up too…..fantastic. And if it doesn’t…..fantastic,  because you get to be you every day regardless.

Stay well, thank you for your time

Andy

Homogeneous Methods

June 18th, 2011

No Method for Golf SignAs the debate over method vs no method continues, I thought I would once again give us all something to think about. A big chunk of this post refers to another discussion about how some take pride in not teaching a ‘method’ but at the same time feel quite comfortable believing orthodox is the best way.

Stealing an analogy from Jim Hardy. If a trauma victim comes in after an accident they may receive 5 different methods/sequences of cure from 5 different doctors. Just depends at which hospital they arrive at. Hopefully, all of the doctors have made the same diagnosis. It is in the diagnosis that we(teachers) should all be very similar. The method of cure we prescribe can and will vary significantly.

Built into this analogy is the assumption that the end goal is that same. A healthy recovery. That in no way assumes that the victim will have the same abilities at the end of each treatment as they may vary depending on which method of cure is provided.

Are these doctors arguing over who was right and who was wrong? I’d be willing to bet they are. However, they all put the victim on a path toward recovery. We can analogize recovery as the things that golf coaches almost all agree on as necessary pieces of a good golf swing. So, that is how we operate.

Now, doctors work toward a common recovery ideal choosing different methods to get there (generally speaking).  How they achieve that recovery can and will vary UNTIL a specific enough case comes in where each Dr will use the same homogeneous method because it has been shown to be the only or most effective method in treating that specific case.  Is that a bad thing? Absolutely not.

The problem in relating to golf is that there is not one singly accepted way that has been shown to be the most effective for treating any specific case.  That isn’t to say that some may believe they have the single most effective way and I bet a million dollars it is every single coach making a living coaching. Each believing that they may have one or two or more of THE best ways to handle a specific case and they use that way every single time that case shows up.

If a teacher believed that they had a way that they felt was the best, wouldn’t we all expect that teacher to teach it to everyone? We can debate best way until we’re blue in the face but that is what would happen. Just like each of us have pieces that we all think we can fix the best so we teach it to everyone when that situation presents itself.

Is this a method? It certainly seems that way to me.  Is it a homogeneous method? Maybe in specific cases. To me, this homogeneous method is what I would call teaching the exact same thing to all. Again, I don’t think anyone does this because as soon as you take the player into account some things will be different between players. Because all players are different, all swings will be different also.

In all my watching of great teachers teaching, I would say every single one of them had a pattern they followed and a sequence they went through. A method. Not a homogeneous method. That isn’t to say that all of their students looked alike. Which, if they did, I’m not so sure would be a bad thing. However, many looked orthodox.

Isn’t Orthodox (Of the ordinary or usual type; normal) just an example of what we expect golf swings to look like? Isn’t orthodox an acceptance of what a homogeneous method should produce?

Should we compare orthodox against the rest? Win for win. Who’s got more? Orthodox or non orthodox? Does it matter? When is orthodox defined and how long does it last? What percentage of swings have to be similar to be considered orthodox? 75%? I don’t know the answer. Isn’t orthodox an organic thing that we expect to mold and change over time as new information, technology and methods are created?

Is this argument happening with tennis? or other sports? I don’t know. I watch tennis and it’s looked the same for 30 years except for the fact that the players are faster and stronger and some use two hands for a backhand and some use one and I know there are different grip types etc. If all the players are doing an orthodox method, how do we rate the teachers ability? Does the teachers ability really matter?

Generally speaking, this is really a debate between Stack and Tilt and non Stack and Tilt.  Stack and Tilt being the method teachers and a bunch of others claiming they are not a method teacher. Since when is teaching orthodox, which by definition, is teaching players to look similar not a method. Does it matter? Clearly, there have been many successful non-orthodox swings in the hall of fame and on the course today. Also, at some point in the past, successful non-orthodox has become the future time periods orthodox.

In my opinion, this all comes down to a belief. Certain people believe in what they are doing and I think that is a good thing. To tell someone what they believe is wrong will always trigger a response. It’s like telling someone that their opinion is wrong. Opinions can’t be wrong. Only facts can be wrong. It is more appropriate to say you don’t understand how they can hold that opinion based on these facts but you can’t say it is wrong.

Let’s just get back to coaching and let history tell the story.

Golfer Alert- The Light is Fading!

February 5th, 2011

A little story to kick off!

Early hours of the morning and a police officer is out on routine patrol when he comes across a drunken man, who is on his hands and knees….scrambling around on the ground under the extended glow from a lamp post. The police officer stops and asks the man, who’s a little worse for wear, if he’s okay and whether he can help him. The man replies that he’s looking for his key…..which dropped from his pocket as he staggered along.

The police officer asks him where he dropped it and is taken aback when the man says….’About 3 streets away!’

‘So why don’t you start to look over there then?’ was the police officer’s understandable question

‘Because the light is better over here’…came the final remark from the man!

Now on the surface, that’s seems such a ludicrous strategy…why would the man be looking in completely the wrong area when he knows the key is somewhere else?

If he knew roughly where the key was…..surely it made better sense to look much closer to where he could potentially find it….wouldn’t it?

And that got me thinking….what if golfers had been convinced that finding the key to their golf game potential….was where the light was better….on the OUTSIDE! And just like the drunken man….in searching out in the light….were in the totally wrong place….what then?

Because here’s my take….my belief….my idea…my insight….my question?

Have players been hoodwinked into believing the key to their game is on the outside….because the light is better…..unaware that no amount of searching will bring them the total prize.

And that perhaps, just like the drunken man, if they looked closer to home….even if the light were a little less bright….they’d enhance the chances of finding what they sought.

I’ve spent time this week with a couple of junior players, both extremely gifted in terms of swinging a golf club, have great ball control, technically very sound and yet have sought me out because the outcomes/scores they rate their game by remain elusive. Why is it like that….clearly both are working extremely hard on their golf swings….their ability/commitment is not in doubt.

Well….I believe it’s because they represent the legion of players who seek the answers to the game by looking where the light is better……in instruction…..in technical opinion….in swing analysis…in stat collection….in ball flight….in what their golf swing looks like….the FORM of their golf game….on the OUTSIDE!

But for me this is the equivalent of the drunken man looking in the wrong place to find the key

….the difference that separates the good swinger….from the good golfer….separates those with the knowledge of the technical side of a the golf swing ….from those with a deeper understanding of how to manage themselves in creating a score…. is by searching where the light is a little less bright….these players find the real key…in the SUBSTANCE of the game..on the INSIDE!

Honestly……how many of you reading this firmly believe your best golf is 100% determined by your technical ability (FORM)….and how many of you believe that the way you create your best performances is in your inner resources (SUBSTANCE)?

So much instruction would have you believe the way to produce consistent performance and have a golf game which is progressive….is by searching where the light is better….OUTSIDE….That the lynchpin of your success is dependent on THE FORM…

I’m not totally buying that….but it’s just my ideas you understand!

That line isn’t placed there to deflect potential criticism from swing coaches who are committed to the idea that better golf performance is directly linked to a better golf swing….the better you swing it…the better your chances of playing better golf. I get that there will be swing coaches who will believe passionately that the ‘no stone unturned’ approach and analysing every aspect of your external game will enhance results….. but that too is just an idea isn’t it?

Because if it where fact…..the technically sound players would challenge every week….the technically flawed would never enter the winners circle….is that how it is?

Technique on its own doesn’t win golf tournaments….. it doesn’t enable you to produce your personal best in the local medal, FORM without SUBSTANCE doesn’t get the job done….. not for me at least.

I’m not suggesting the FORM of your game isn’t important, of course players should seek out sound technical advice, understand the laws of the golf swing to increase the percentage of well hit shots….of course it’s part of the approach…..BUT IT’S JUST A PART…..IT’S NOT THE WHOLE POT!

The two junior players I mention have become so fixated on the FORM of their game….they’ve not developed an understanding of how to play….how to construct a score when the swing isn’t quite there….scramble it around when the chips are down. When the form of their game is inconsistent….it falls apart.

And because they play and rate their game soley based on outcomes/scores….they start all over again….looking for answers where the light is better…..on the outside. Even though the key is 3 streets away…they look here under the lamp post ….waiting for the police officer to ask what they are doing looking in the wrong place…..the cycle just continues .

I’ve coached players over the past 18 months with what I’d label as being INSIDE-OUT. I’m convinced players performance is rooted in SUBSTANCE…and form is an extension of that.

Performance control comes out of inner state control…..inner resources leading external attributes. In terms of FORM….I don’t have the badge….the credentials….the tour players to reel off….the reputation of mixing with the big boys….but I have SUBSTANCE…..I have credibility with the players who work with me….I own my own skill set……I don’t have to look where the light is better.

Has modern instruction taken players to where the lamp post is and become fixated with the outside form…..I believe a lot of coaching has.

Do we have a legion of players who have a far greater knowledge of the golf swing than ever before…..I think we do…..but I also suspect we have a growing percentage of players who have gained knowledge of the swing….at the expense of the understanding of themselves and how to play the game.

I’ve mentioned before that until injury decimated my game….by today’s standards…I had limited knowledge of swing dynamics and the FORM of my game. But I had SUBSTANCE….I understood MY GAME…..my internal resources….and I produced a game which repeated and played to my full potential. The fact that potential didn’t take me to the top of the tree is irrelevant….I made the best of what I had.

So my wish for anyone reading this is as follows.

If you’re totally committed to squeezing every inch of potential out of your game…and you sense you’ve become exclusively fixated on the form of your game (swing technique, ball flight, stats, outcomes) you may like to consider it’s a bit like the guy scrambling around under for a lamppost for a key which is 3 streets away…..

The two juniors who’ve started working on a more INSIDE-OUT approach…..still go to their swing coach and work hard on their form……the light is better over there.

But they’ve also discovered that by searching closer to home….where the light is a little dimmer….the key is always in reach. Substance enhances the form…..

I’d encourage you all to continue to work on the form of your game and seek out quality instruction from swing coaches who have wonderful knowledge and skill sets to share. The outside skill is important…..but without the inner substance that underpins performance…..I wish you luck…..because you’re sure going to need it by the bucket load.

It frustrates me to see so many gifted players throwing huge resources in terms of money and time at the form part of their game….and practically zero at the substance.

To me, that’s equivalent to spending a huge amount on car cleaner and nothing on petrol! The car sure looks great out in the light…..but is going nowhere anytime soon. There’s a big difference between what a swing looks like…..and what it produces under pressure. The answer isn’t more knowledge of the golf swing….it’s a deeper understanding of yourself.

I’m committed to following my passion of helping players discover  the substance that drives their game….because it’s the desire……resilience…..patience…..freedom…..confidence……trust….that will define their game…..irrespective of outside form.

Ask yourself this- Does your game look the part….allow you to hit controlled shots at will….but still leaves you feeling something is missing. Look where the light is a little dimmer…..and you may just find the key that unlocks your game.

Performance enhancement  in my belief structure comes from the inside…..if you’ve decided that continuously looking outside makes more sense…..I just hope it’s a worthwhile use of your time and resources.

I know players typically spend up to 90% of their thoughts in technique and form…..and little more than 10% on the substance that underpins it. That’s a huge wave of counter-evidence stacked up against me!

I’ll leave you with a thought. Is the reason why you’d rather spend money on a swing lesson and analysis….rather than seeking guidance on developing substance….merely because the light is better?

I wish you all well in your journey of perfecting the golf game based on form……but if the sacrifice is a game built on limited substance….is it a sacrifice worth the money?

Thank you for your time, attention…..reading skills and subsequent thoughts….it’s always much appreciated.
