Best Putting Drill

June 29th, 2010

I’ve used this Putting Station for years and had always planned on writing a blog post about it so here we go.  First here’s a picture of the station:

Here’s how to set this up.  If you don’t have one, go down to Home Depot or Lowes or any hardware store and get yourself a chalk line and some chalk.  That is what I used to create the red line on the ground.  You can snap a line for a straight putt or a braking putt but it’s best for this station to use a straight putt.  The two tees by the ball create a gate for the stroke to keep your contact in line with the sweetspot and helps to reinforce good aim.  They should be positioned just outside the toe and heel of your putter.  Line on the putter and line on the ground should over lap.  Make sure there is line showing beyond the back edge of the putter( it makes it much easier to line up that way).  If you don’t use a line,  intersect the line with the leading edge of your putter.  One thing this picture does not show is the putter.  The putter and ball should begin even with the first set of tees.  So, at address, the putter is right between the gate with the ball just in front of that.  The picture above is just of the tools needed for the putting station and not an accurate depiction of where the ball should go.

The other two tees a few inches in front are just beyond the width of a golf ball straddling the line.  These tees should be quite close to the width of the ball.  These tees are used to test your face angle control.  Only putts starting exactly on the line with a square face will propel the ball through the gate and on its way.

Work on this station for putts within 6 feet.  It can be used beyond that but I don’t recommend it.  You want to practice makes and distance control.  This station should be set-up in a way that every ball that gets through the second gate with decent speed goes in.

This will really show you how well you are managing the face of the putter.  That’s where the money is made.

FACE and PACE.

A few days ago, I tweeted that I had passed my TPI certification test and thought I would share that information here now.   It was a 20 question exam that was multiple choice and open book.  A score of 80% was required to pass and I received a 95%.  I got one question wrong but I don’t like the fact that they don’t tell me which one so I can correct my mistake.

This information has already assisted me with some students in encouraging them to do some specific exercises that would help their swing.  I also think it will become very useful in the Fall to help structure fitness programs over the winter time.

I am currently the only PGA Member in Rochester, NY working at a green grass location that is TPI Certified.  I am currently looking for a fitness professional to begin the team making process.

John Graham Launches New AimPoint Clinic Website

AimPoint Golf

AimPoint Golf

In the last week or so, I’ve finalized my plans to provide 6 AimPoint Golf Green Reading Clincs while in Cambridge, England.  A big Thank You goes out to Jamie Donaldson for all his hard work in hosting me and the event.  It will be the first of it’s kind in the UK and I am proud to be a part of it.

Since that time, I have received a few questions about doing clinics in other parts of the country and Denmark.  I thought it would be a good idea to create a website dedicated solely to my AimPoint Golf Green Reading Clinics.  This site will contain all of my upcoming clinics, clinics I am working on finalizing and information on how to host a clinic.  It will also become the main hub for dealing with payment in foreign currencies.

The new website will be http://aimpointgolfclinics.com and should launch in the next day or two.  This site will be just for my clinics and will not represent all the clinics that are offered by other AimPoint instructors.  It will include a link to the main page where all the AimPoint Green Reading Clinics are listed and who is teaching them.

It will provide detailed information on how to go about hosting a clinic at your facility and the requirements necessary.  I believe this new site will allow me to continue to grow my AimPoint Business while at the same time showing you how to make some money by inviting me over.

Start the Downswing with a……..?

June 4th, 2010

I recently posted a question on twitter:

Downswing Question

Downswing Question

I asked this question because of a conversation I had with another TPI Certified Golf Fitness Instructor about this subject.  It seemed to me that it was expressed at the seminar that a hip rotation leading the downswing would help prevent over the top.  Me and the other Pro had a difference of opinion.  He tweeted me this:

I must say, I wish I had a few more replies so I tweeted mytpi but haven’t heard a response back yet.  I may have misunderstood their comment and if so, will post it here.

This debate has been going on for many years and I’m sure it will continue.  It’s good because it’s for the betterment of all golfers.

Please share your comments and opinions about how initiating the downswing with a hip turn will affect over the top.
