Monroe Community College – 2010 Season

April 12th, 2010

This past weekend saw the start of the Monroe Community College golf season.  Friday was the team’s first match at the Mohawk Valley CC Invitational.  This year saw a venue change to Skenendoa CC.  Monroe was off to fast start in the cold and windy weather and came out with the individual medalist in Eric Principino’s 76 and a team winning score of 313.

The Broome Community College Invitational was played on Saturday at the Endwell Greens GC.  Again, Monroe CC walked away with the individual medalist in Ben Finn’s 74 and a team winning score of 301.

This year’s team consists of 11 fine players.  The competition amongst the team should provide a healthy dose of pressure during qualifiers elevating everyone’s game.

Stay tuned here for continued information on how the team is doing.

Next up is a two day tournament in Jamestown followed by a single day event in Erie.

Ok, so the regular season is over and we begin preparing for the post season.  Our Region III Championship will begin Monday, May 17th at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Course at Cornell University.  A very nice place that annually hosts the New York State High School Championship.  The five players competing for Monroe CC are Matt Dejohn(@dejohnmd4), Eric Principino, Ben Finn, Tim McCall(@tmccallgolf) and Taylor Page.

During the regular season, we won every tournament entered and also had a team member win medalist honors in all but one event.  The team was very deep and competitive and should be very strong for next year also.

D Plane for Off Center Hits

April 5th, 2010

I started a thread over at Brian Manzella’s site talking about the future of the D Plane.  As a model, I think it needs a little refining to handle the off center hits.  I’m not exactly sure what that refining will turn into but I have a theory.

I was talking with David Colclough about this topic and he really got me thinking.  I’ve asked some very smart people about my theory and will discuss the results after I hear back.

Ok, so here’s my theory.  The D Plane suggests that the spin axis on the ball will be perpendicular to the plane formed by the 3d club path and clubface normal.  It also suggests that the lift forces will be perpendicular to the spin axis.  This model works wonderfully for center hits.  However, for off center hits, the spin axis and lift forces are not in the D plane because of the gear effect caused by the off center hit.

My theory, which allows for center hits and off center hits to be accurately described is to use the 3d direction of the spin axis as the top vector and not the clubface normal.  This would allow for a properly shaped D Plane for any outcome.  I don’t know if I’m right and I’m pretty sure someone much smarter than me will come up with the right model.

I can say this.  The email I received from Fredrick Tuxen  shows agreement that the D Plane model is not sufficient to explain off center hits

Let the tweaking begin.

AimPoint Golf Green Reading Conversion Chart

April 3rd, 2010

I’ve received a couple requests and questions about converting Exelys Breakmaster degrees of slope to percent slope so I thought I would post the conversion chart.  This chart can also be used for conversion from phone apps as well.  Chart provided by Mark Sweeney on the AimPoint Golf Forum.

For those of you looking for how can I expand this chart, here’s the formula.

Tangent (degrees) * 100 = Percent slope

So, find the Tan of what ever degrees you are searching for, Multiply by 100 and you’ll have your % slope:

Monroe Community College Golf – 2009 National Champions

April 1st, 2010

The Perfect Season.  Many teams dream about. Very few ever accomplish it. The 2009 Monroe Community College Golf team did just that.  A win in every tournament played.  That is very rare in college golf and will go down as one the best seasons ever for NJCAA Division III Golf.

Congratulations to:

Ben Finn, Derek Doyle, Jeff Gasbarre, Nick Lomenzo, Chris Malec, Taylor Page, Tyler Phillips and Jordan Wilson.
